Meet Mark Powell
Mark Powell is a local, semi-retired carpenter who has worked in Hamilton and beyond since he was 17. Raised in a large family that includes city workers and teachers, Mark has always considered it a privilege to raise his own family, make a living, and be part of such a vibrant, deeply rooted community. For nearly 50 years, Mark has been much more than a carpenter. Alongside his wife, Regan, he refurbished homes throughout the city and spent countless hours helping friends, neighbours, and fellow contractors solve problems—often asking for nothing in return but the satisfaction of helping. That practical experience has given Mark a strong understanding of how homes, neighbourhoods, and city services affect people’s daily lives. He knows how to listen, assess a problem, work with others, and follow through until a solution is found—skills that are also essential for an effective councillor. Mark and Regan were also deeply involved in their community. They supported social justice causes, protests, and grassroots efforts, defended friends when they saw injustice, and rescued countless domestic and wild animals. Mark has always believed in getting involved rather than standing on the sidelines.
Friends and neighbours stood beside Mark through the devastating loss of his son Zak, who struggled with kidney disease, and later through the tragic death of Regan, who was killed while standing up for the right to protest and for journalists investigating industry. Friends helped memorialize Zak with a commemorative bench at Beulah Park, a place cherished by generations of Mark’s family. After Regan’s death, the community rallied around Mark. Friends and neighbours continue to support Mark as he seeks justice for Regan. For the past six years, Mark has carried Regan’s torch, participating in rallies and community events across Hamilton and around the world. Alongside his son Josh, he successfully challenged legislation restricting whistleblowers’ rights. He has also refused a quick settlement following Regan’s death, navigating the civil court system to obtain evidence that should have been collected in the first place.
Through these experiences, Mark has developed the persistence, independence, and advocacy skills needed to represent Ward 1 effectively. He understands how to stand up for people, work through complicated systems, and keep going when the process becomes difficult.
Mark knows Ward 1—its streets, people, and history—and understands that this is a community that cares, pays attention, speaks up, and gets involved. He knows that residents deserve a councillor who will listen carefully, communicate honestly, and turn their concerns into action at City Hall, while working persistently to get results. Now, Mark wants to give back to the community that has been there for him. Mark Powell has the experience, practical knowledge, compassion, and determination to be that councillor. He knows this community, understands what it means to show up for people, and has had his ear to the ground for decades. If you want a councillor who will listen, stand up for Ward 1, and work hard for its future, support Mark Powell’s campaign.
You’ve been there for Mark. Now, he wants to be there for you.
